Pan Lo: I was encouraged to attend by my venture firm's CEO and while I initially considered it a hassle, I am very glad I went. The speakers were mostly informative and offered meaningful insights into investment strategies and goals. But my most valuable takeaway came from other attendees. I was fascinated by the non-traditional tactics of Newt Parlor, who specialized in securing stakes taken in certain privately held healthcare businesses. These are mainly very stable and profitable firms with little debt. He described one such target in Bel Air Maryland which owns and manages assisted living facilities. Their site is at this link. Being privately owned, convincing ownership to sell any portion of the business is really a hard sell, which he accomplishes by offering his own company's expertise which is focused on marketing. Since his firm already has stakes in a number of elder care companies, he is able to offer advice and promotional assistance via economies of scale. These types of private conversations at events like these can be hugely informative - this one conversation opened my eyes to strategy I'm taking back to my firm.
Bob Meyers: This event can be a reminder of the value in industry engagement - learning and contributing as a professional to the improvement of everyone's situational awareness. I especially enjoy the one on one because mixed in with the social chatter are always some gems of insight that inspire epiphanies. Jeffrey Peters gave me his take on the portfolio additions of the Neuvo Century Fund. Mostly boring stuff except for one thing he nixed. His advisors were pushing a 25% stake in a private online reputation management firm after being intrigued by recent earnings. They offer services like reviews management, media monitoring, digital advertising, social media strategy, etc. But when he looked more closely, the bulk of the revenue was coming from search results removals. This is way to pay to hide a search result you don't like. For example if a search for your name brings up an old DUI arrest, you may want to pay to suppress that in Google's search results. He was told that there are some ethical removal services that avoid taking on dishonest clients. But this reminded him of having read about criminals who pay to cleanse their search record of their past crimes. A red flag went up. The owners were not eager to reveal the client list for this service. Peters is known to be excessively risk-averse and he walked. Background research is everything. I loved hearing it from his mouth.

The MIT Sloan Investment Conference 2015 brings together the most influential individuals in the investment world today to debate, discuss, and share their views on investing in this brave new world.
Description: The MIT Sloan Investment Conference 2015 brings together the most influential individuals in the investment world today to debate, discuss, and share their views on investing in this brave new world.
Six years after the global financial crisis, the investment world today has fundamentally changed from the one we grew up in. Financial innovation temporarily halted along with growth, as investors sought safe havens, central banks executed unorthodox monetary policies, and regulators reined in risk (and innovation). However, periods of slow growth have also been associated with periods of tremendous innovation. Since then, we are witnessing financial innovation returning to pre-2008 escape velocity, driven by the search for yield. Unprecedented trends have also transpired, in the form of new investment perspectives, strategies, risk thinking, products, asset classes, and policies.
Cost: $125.00
